hi,
here is the solution:--
_________________
let the present ages of both persons be:
= x and 4x ( given 4:1 )
------------------------------
ages before 5 years-
= x - 5 and 4x - 5
------------------------------
now,
from this we get an equation= 4x-5 + x-5 =60
_________________
solution:--
==>4x - 5 + x - 5 = 60
==>5x - 5 - 5 = 60
==>5x - 10 = 60
==>5x = 60 + 10
==>5x = 70
==> x = 14
_________________
age of son = 14
age of father = 14 × 4 = 56

Given   : The total of the ages of a father and his son was 60 years.

Solution:--

4x - 5 + x - 5 = 60

5x - 5 - 5 = 60

5x - 10 = 60

5x = 60 + 10

5x = 70

x = 14

Age of son = 14

Age of father = 14 × 4 = 56
