Step-by-step explanation:

let Jacob present age be x

let son's present age be y

five years later

Jacob age = x + 5

son's age = y + 5

five years later Jacob will be 3 times of son

x + 5 = 3(y + 5)

x + 5 = 3y + 15

x - 3y = 15 - 5

x - 3y = 10 equ (1)

five years ago

Jacob age was x - 5

son's age was y - 5

five years ago Jacob was 7 times of son's age

x - 5 = 7(y - 5)

x - 5 = 7y - 35

x - 7y = - 35 + 5

x - 7y = - 30 equ (2)

subtract (2) - (1)

x - 7y = -30

-(x - 3y = 10)

x - 7y - x + 3y = -30 - 10

- 4y = - 40

4y = 40

y = 40/4 = 10

substitute y = 10 in equ (1)

x - 3y = 10

x - 3(10) = 10

x - 30 = 10

x = 10 + 30

x = 40

therefore Jacob's present age = x = 40

son's present age = y = 10

hope you get your answer
