Answer:

Let the present age of Jacob be x yrs

the present age of Jacob's son be y yrs .

Five yrs hence,

Age of Jacob =( x + 5) yrs

Age of Jacob's son = ( y+5) yrs

A/q

x + 5 = 3 ( y + 5 )

=> x + 5 = 3y + 15

=> x = 3y + 15 - 5

=> x = 3y + 10 ........................(1)

Five yrs ago,

Age of Jacob = ( x - 5 ) yrs

Age of Jacob's son = (y-5) yrs

A/q

x - 5 = 7( y - 5 )

=> x - 5 = 7y - 35

=> x = 7y - 35 + 5

=> x = 7y - 30..........................(2)

From ....... (1) and (2)

=> 3y + 10 = 7y - 30

=> 10 + 30 = 7y - 3y

=> 40 = 4y

=> 4y = 40

=> y = 40/4 = 10 yrs

And,

from .......(1)

x = 3y + 10

= 3 × 10 + 10

= 40 yrs..

Hence , the present age of Jacob is 40 yrs

the present age of Jacob's son is 10 yrs .

Hope it helps you...
