Flagella in E. coli. Gram negative bacteria (such as E. coli and S. typhimurium) have 3 distinct surface layers: inner and outer phospholipid membranes, between which lies the rigid peptidoglycan cell wall. The space between the inner and the outer membranes is called the periplasmic space.
