Flattery is a great art. It is inborn. It cannot be taught or acquired.
It is always in the very blood of a flatterer. It is the sign of a mean
person. It is the art of praising a person who does not deserve it
and it is done with a view, to get some favour from him or her
Walter Raleigh has rightly said that a flatterer gives undeserved
praise with a hidden motive.
A flatterer polishes a lie with the thick varnish of flasehood so
perfectly that it shines as much as perfect truth. Often flattery is
an exaggerated praise. As the bees buzz around the flowers and
suck their juice, similarly, flatterers are bees in human shape and
flock around those who enjoy power, pelf, and position.
A flatterer is a great psychologist. He knows all the faults of person.
All people like praise, but few like flattery. They like men to flatter
them. In fact, everyone loves to be flattered. It is a common human
weakness.
