A stranger who is  completely covered with bandages, but for his nose, arrives at Iping >> he takes a room in the inn coach and horses >> Mrs Hall tries her best to find out more about the man but could not >> Mr.Teddy Henfry the clock jobber comes to repair the clock>> tries to get acquainted with the stranger without success >>Mr. Henfry thinks that the stranger is a suspicious character and tries to warn Mr. Hall >> the luggage of the stranger which consists of innumerable bottles arrives >> the cart-man's dog bites the stranger while receiving the parcel >> people note that they could see only darkness through the tear in the pants >> Mr. hall goes to the stranger to inquire about the wound and was thrown out of the room by some strange force which he could not really  understand. So he keeps quiet about it >> Mrs. Hall comes into the room unexpectedly and sees him without his glasses and gets the impression that there were two hollows in place of his eyes >> the villagers speculate about the stranger and thinks that he has a patched body >> they form many assumptions about him >> children consider him a 'bogey man' >> Mr. Cuss comes to interview him and was disturbed to see his empty sleeves moving as if there is an arm in it >> A burglary occurs in the vicarage. The vicar and his wife witness the burglary but was not able to see the culprit >> Mr and Mrs. Hall come to the stranger's room when he was not there. They see his clothes on the bed and the chair. As they watch the bed clothes and the furniture of the room go berserk. They are convinced that the stranger has put spirits in them. A chair comes up and pushes Mrs. Hall out of the room >> they get some of the neighbours together and decide not to let him into the parlour. but he tricks them and gets into the parlour and closes the door >> in spite of him calling for his breakfast Mr. Hall refuses to serve him because he had not paid his dues for some time. She serves him the bills on a plate >>the stranger gets angry and plucks his nose and gives her. the people were frightened. the stranger proceeds to remove the bandages from his head and stands headless.>> the police was summoned. the stranger  is willing to surrender on the condition that they will not put hand-cuffs on him. He removes the rest of his clothes and disappears telling them that he is an invisible man >> Mr. Gibbins a naturalist hears sneezing and curses but not the person and gets scared >> Marvel, a vagabond also hears sounds without a body >> the invisible man manages to get Marvel as his accomplice.(end of chapter 9)
