The Munda people (Hindi: मुंडा, Assamese: মুণ্ডা, Bengali: মুন্ডা) are an ethnic group of India. They speak the Mundari language as their native language, which belongs to the Munda subgroup of Austroasiatic languages. The Munda are found in the northern areas of east India concentrated in the states of Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. Munda also reside in adjacent areas of Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Arunachal Pradesh as well as in portions of Bangladesh. The group is one of India's largest scheduled tribes. Munda people in Tripura are also known as Mura, and in Madhya Pradesh they are often called Mudas.

Birsa munda - ( 15 November 1875 - 9 July 1900 ) was an Indian tribal freedom freighter , religion leader and folk hero who belonged to the Minda tribe .

He spearheaded an Indian tribal religious Millenarian movement that arose in the tribal belt of modern day Bihar and Jharkhand in the late 19 the century during the British Raj there by making him an important figure in the history of the Indian independent movement . His achievement are even more remarkable for having been accomplished .
