Answer:The Rowlatt Act passed in 1919 gave wide powers to the british government to arrest and imprison any person for an indefinite period without any trial. This was specifically done to suppress indian nationalists.

  • On 6 April 1919, Mahatma Gandhi launched an anti-Rowlatt satyagraha to oppose the Act.
  • Gandhiji lost faith in the goodwill of the british government. Rabindranath Tagore renounced his knighthood in protest.
  • On 13 April 1919, people of Amritsar had gathered for a peaceful meeting at jallianwala bagh to protest the arrest of Dr Satyapal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew. General Dyer, the military commander of Amritsar, ordered his troops to open fire upon the unarmed crowd. As a result, hundreds of people were killed and wounded.
