Flow of Electric Current
When two charged bodies with a potential difference
are brought into electrical contact, electric current flows
from the higher potential to the lower potential till the
two become the same. In a conductor, electrons will
move along the conductor only if there is a potential
difference along it. The difference of potential is created
by the cell or a battery in the circuit. An electric cell
maintains a constant potential difference between its
terminals with the help of chemical reactions going on
inside the cell. Thus, it converts chemical energy into
electrical energy. Thus, the cell creates an electromotive
force (e.m.f.) which acts on the electrons present in the
conductor and sets it in motion. The flow of electrons
constitute the electric current in the conductor.
