Basics:

The plasma membrane, also called the cell membrane, is the membrane found in all cells that separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment. In bacterial and plant cells, a cell wall is attached to the plasma membrane on its outside surface.

Explanation:

The fluid mosaic model explains various observations regarding the structure of functional cell membranes. According to this biological model,

  1. there is a lipid bilayer (two molecules thick layer consisting primarily of amphipathic phospholipids)
  2. in which protein molecules are embedded. The lipid bilayer gives fluidity and elasticity to the membrane.
  3. Small amounts of carbohydrates are also found in the cell membrane. Membrane carbohydrates perform two main functions:
  • participate in cell recognition and adhesion, either cell-cell signaling or cell-pathogen interactions,
  • and they have a structural role as a physical barrier.

Carbohydrates of the plasma membrane are major recognition and attaching sites for pathogens during infection.
