To purify fluorine, the gas is passed through copper U tubes containing dry NaF which absorbs HF vapours to form sodium hydrogen fluoride. NaF (s) + HF (g) → NaHF 2 Carbon tetrafluoride is condensed by cooling the gas in a trap cooled in liquid oxygen (90 K). Only CF 4 gets condensed and is removed.
