a change of wavelength exhibited by some of the radiation scattered in a medium. The effect is specific to the molecules which cause it, and so can be used in spectroscopic analysis.

Raman Effect :- When a visible light or invisible light (u.v.) pass through a gas , liquid or transparent solid it is absorbed by the molecule and scattered in all directions the spectrum of the scattered light is found to consists of lines of the same frequencies as the incident light (Rayleigh's lines) and also certain weak lines of changed. Frequencies these additional lines are called Raman lines..
