The dinoflagellates are protists constituting the phylum Dinoflagellata. Usually considered algae, dinoflagellates are mostly marine plankton, but they also are common in freshwater habitats. Their populations are distributed depending on sea surface temperature, salinity, or depth

Dinoflagellates are classified under Kingdom Protista in the five kingdom classification given by R.H. Whittaker.

They are marine and photosynthetic having pigments like chlorophyll a, chlorophyll c, xanthophyll.

Their cell wall is in the form of articulated plates.

They have two flagella, one is longitudinal and the other lies transversely in a furrow between the plates

Some dinoflagellates are toxic like Gonyaulax and gymnodium which cause paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Gonyaulax causes red tides.
