Actually there are two organisms which help in this process- lichens and mosses.The main role is played by lichens.
Lichens are known as the Pioneer Community in the breaking of rocks and formation of soil.Mainly the crustose lichens (Graphis,Rhizocarpon) settle their propagules and get established on wet rocks after rain.They release acidic substances which corrodes the rock surface forming small depressions.The dead and decaying organic materials of the lichens get collected in the depressions and forms a little bit of soil by mixing with weathered rock particles. Thus the habitat becomes suitable for foliose lichens which slowly replaces the crustose lichen due to their larger size.This increases the shading of rocks and formation of bigger depressions.
This makes the soil more suitable for growth of mosses.And by and by the rock is converted to soil.
The formation of soil from the rock can be shown in a short manner by the following way:
