Following is the frequency distribution table of the mark obtained by 40 students in economics in a school. Prepare ‘less than’ and ‘more than’ cumulative frequency distribution table from it. (See Lesson-6) Class No. of Student 0–20 5 20–40 7 40–60 23 60–80 3 80–100 2

Solution :-
Class Marks Frequency Cumulative Frequency
0 - 20 5 5
20 - 40 7 12 = 5 + (7)
40 - 60 23 35 = 23 + (5 + 7)
60 - 80 3 38 = 3 + (5 + 7 + 23)
80 - 100 2 40 = 2 + (5 + 7 + 23 + 2)
The frequency can be added to obtain the cumulative frequency. In the above table, it is observed that 5 students got marks 'less than 20', 12 students got marks 'less than 40' and so on.
Therefore, the above distribution is called 'Less Than' cumulative frequency distribution.
Therefore, the above table can be re-written as 'less than' cumulative frequency distribution table :
Class Cumulative Frequency
Less than 20 5
Less than 40 12
Less than 60 35
Less than 80 38
Less than 100 40
In the same way 'more than' cumulative frequency distribution can be obtained by adding to the other frequencies in the reverse order.
Class Marks Frequency Cumulative Frequency
0 - 20 5 40 = 5 + (7 + 23 + 3 + 2)
20 - 40 7 35 = 7 + (23 + 3 + 2)
40 - 60 23 28 = 23 + (3 + 2)
60 - 80 3 5 = 3 + (2)
80 - 100 2 2
The above table can be re-written as 'more than' cumulative frequency table :
Class Cumulative Frequency
More than 0 40
More than 20 35
More than 40 28
More than 60 5
More than 80 2
Class Marks Frequency Cumulative Frequency
