because zinc has higher melting point than tin, zinc is more reactive than tin which may react with food items and make it unfit for health ....and also zinc is costlier than tin...

‘Food cans’ are coated with ‘tin’ and not with zinc because zinc is a ‘more reactive compound’ as compared to tin.

Explanation:

  • Zinc can react naturally with acids and bases present on food. Since zinc is an amphoteric substance it can react with both acids and bases.
  • Also steam reacts with Zinc. Hence if food containing these acids and bases come in contact with zinc then the food becomes ‘unfit for consumption’.
  • Also the malleable form of pure zinc is much more expensive as compared to tin. So food is packed in tin container.
