Food chains are unidirectional i.e takes place through the trophic level. The energy flow in the trophic level decreases while the chemical flow increases.

Hey buddy ...Your question must be ....The flow of energy in food chain is unidirectional . It is due to the following reason.

  • The flow of energy is unidirectional because once the energy is lost in environment it cannot revert back to autotrophs.
  • Plants take 1% of energy from sun. they use this energy in making food. Now this energy will not be revert back to sun.
  • When these plants are eaten by consumers a great deal of energy is lost in the environment . Some energy is used up by consumers in their various life processes like breathing ,digestion, excretion etc.An average of 10% energy is left inside their body which is made available for next level of consumer.

Hence the energy captured by plants from sun and by consumers from plants cannot revert back to them , so we can say that flow of energy is unidirectional.
