Food production in India shows signs of stagnation, due to the following reasons:

I)Decrease in fertility of soil due to excessive use of fertlizers, pesticides, etc.

II)In order to grow water intensive crops faster, water is pumped excessively from the acquifiers resulting in decrease of water shortage.

III)Reduction in agricultural land as some part is used for setting of industries and houses.

IV)Scarcity of water in some areas.

V)Low production area for food grains as a major part is covered by cultivation of cash crops.
