His full name is Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu. He was born to Rangaiah Naidu and Ramanamma , in a family of farmers at Chavatapalem in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh on July 1, 1949.
He completed schooling from V. R. High School, Nellore, and pursued his bachelor's degree in politics and diplomatic studies from V. R. College. He acquired a bachelor's degree in law with specialization in international law from Andhra University College of Law in Visakhapatnam.
He started his political career in 1973 as a student leader and later joined the Jan Sangh.He joined the BJP in 1980.
He has served as the Rural Development Minister in the government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In PM Narendra Modi's government, he was the minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Information and Broadcasting and Urban Development. He was also the BJP national president from July 2002 to October 2004.
He has started several urban missions like the Smart City Mission, Atal Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission and Housing for All and 'Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana'.
He is also involved with a trust named - "Swarna Bharath Trust", which runs a school for poor, orphaned and special-needs children and imparts self-employment training programs.
He has been elected as the 13th Vice-President of India and will succeed Mohammad Hamid Ansari as the Vice-President.

In 1974, he became the convener of the anti-corruption Jayaprakash Narayan Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti of Andhra Pradesh. He took to streets in protest against the emergency and was imprisoned. From 1977–80, he was president of its youth wing.
Both as a student leader and political figure, Naidu gained prominence as a brilliant orator, who vigorously championed the cause of the farmers and the development of backward areas. His oratory skills and political activism propelled his political career and he was elected as an MLA to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly twice from Udayagiri constituency in Nellore district in 1978 and 1983. He rose to become one of the most popular leaders of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh.
