Answer:
The word Statistics seems to have been derived from the Latin word ‘status’ or the Italian word ‘statista’ or the German word ‘statistik’ or the French word ‘statistique’ each of which means a political state.
The word ‘statistics’ was used for the collection of data concerning states both historical and descriptive. Now it has acquired a much wider meaning and is used for all types of data and methods for the analysis of the data. Thus in recent times it is used in two senses, namely, singular and plural.
Characteristics of statistics are :-
1. It consists of aggregates of facts
2. It is effected by many causes
3. It should be numerically expressed
4. It must be enumerated or estimated accurately
5. It should be collected in a systematic manner
6. It should be collected for a predetermined purpose
7. It should be capable of being placed in relation to each other
