Given :- for a grouped frequency distribution having eight classes, the upper class boundaries of the lowest and the highest classes are 10 and 66 respectively. What is the lower class boundary of the highest class ?

Solution :-

we know that,

  • The upper class boundary of a given class is obtained by averaging the upper limit of the class and the lower limit of the next class.
  • The lower class limit of a class is the smallest data value that can go into the class.
  • The upper class limit of a class is the largest data value that can go into the class.

given that,

  • upper class boundary of lowest class = 10.
  • upper class boundary of highest class = 66.
  • Total classes = 8 .

So,

→ Difference between upper class boundary of highest class and lowest class = 66 - 10 = 56

and,

→ Total class = 8

Therefore,

→ class interval = 8 .

and,

→ upper class boundary of lowest class = (upper limit of first class + lower limit of second class) / 2

→ 10 = (upper limit of first class + lower limit of second class) / 2

→ 20 = (upper limit of first class + lower limit of second class)

Hence,

→ upper limit of first class = lower limit of second class = 10 .

So,

→ Lower limit of first class = 10 - 8 = 2.

Than,

Our Required 8 classes are :-

  • First class = 2 - 10
  • Second class = 10 - 18
  • Third class = 18 - 26
  • Fourth class = 26 - 34
  • Fifth class = 34 - 42
  • sixth class = 42 - 50
  • Seventh class = 50 - 58
  • Eighth class = 58 - 66 .

Therefore,

→ The lower class boundary of a highest class is = (upper limit of the previous class and the lower limit of the given class) / 2 = (58 + 58)/2 = 116/2 = 58 (Ans.)

The lower class boundary of a highest class is 58.
