For a particular ocean basin, assume that it is perfectly symmetrical about the spreading axis, and again that the water depth at the spreading ridge is 2.5 km. If the half spreading rate is 5 cm/year, and the distance from the ridge to the subduction zone is 3000 km:
• calculate the mean age of the lithosphere, in millions of years (Ma) [hint: this is very very simple, don't make it more complicated than it is]
• would dinosaurs have been alive when the lithosphere that is now at the trench was formed?
• calculate the mean depth of the ocean basin, in km
Hint: For this you will need to use the Mean Value Theorem from calculus
