Given:

The diametrical pitch = 0.25

The number of teeth = 40

To Find:

The pitch circle diameter of the spur gear

Solution:

Diametral Pitch = Number of teeth on the wheel/Diameter of the pitch circle

Here, the number of teeth on the wheel is the count of teeth on the wheel.  And the diameter of the pitch circle is the diameter of the circle on which the hinge centers of the chain lie, when the chain is wrapped around a sprocket. It is measured in meters.

or Pd = T/PCD

or PCD = T / Pd

Substituting the values,

PCD = 40 / 0.25

= 40 X 100 / 25

= 40 X 4

= 160mm

Hence, the pitch circle diameter will be C. 160mm.
