For an angle θ with the point (−5, −12) on its terminating side, what is the value of cosine?

SamRaiden: I hope the cos will always be negative there
SamRaiden: is it correct
SamRaiden: as in third quadrant it is alway negative

As can be seen from the image, the point (-5, -12) lies in the third quadrant.

To get the cosine, we need the hypotenuse

Hypotenuse = √(5² + 12²)

                     = √169

                     = 13

Cosine = Adjacent/hypotenuse

            = -5/13

            = - 0.3846
