for an element x, it is given that atomic number=17 and mass number=35.(i)write the electronic configuration of the element x.(ii)find its valency.(iii)what will be the formula of the compound formed between x(above) and y having valency 3?

(i) The element is chlorine and it’s electronic configuration is “2,8,7”.

(ii) Calculation of Valency of chlorine:
The electronic configuration of chlorine=2, 8, 7.
Since, chlorine has 7 (more than 4) electrons in its outermost shell.
Therefore,
valency of chlorine = 8 - no. of electrons in outermost shell      = 8 - 7                                                                               

= 1
∴ chlorine has 1 valency.

(iii) the compound formed will be nitrogen chloride and the relation between the two elements is isotope.
