The coefficient of restitution for any collision 'generally' lies between zero and one. However, there are cases when it can be less than zero implying the objects passed through one another without fully engaging resulting in an an incomplete transfer of momentum [e.g. a bullet passing through a target]. Also in some cases it can exceed one representing a collision in which energy is released also known as superelastic collisions.
