For an object to be in uniform acceleration, why does it need to travel in a straight line?

because when it travels in diffrent directions,velocity differ in directions even through it have same magnitude so acceleration is not uniform

firstly I want to say that what do you mean by acceleration? I think you all know that ,that is rate of change of velocity. and if I ask what is velocity? then you will say that, it is the rate of change of displacement.

now your question's answer will clear if I ask that what is displacement?It is the shortest distance so,for an uniform acceleration we have to move in a straight line.
