For assimilation of one CO₂ molecule via photosynthesis, the energy required in form of ATP and NADPH is 3ATP and 2NADPH. (option c)

  • For CO2 assimilation 3ATP and 2NADPH are required.
  • Arnon was the first to use the term assimilatory power to refer to ATP and NADPH.
  • The reduction of NADP into NADPH + H+ occurs through an electron transport chain (ETC) in photosynthesis.
  • Whereas, the process by which ATP is produced from ADP and inorganic phosphate making use of the sunlight is called photophosphorylation.
  • The electron flow through the electron transport chain is connected to photophosphorylation.
  • For 1 Calvin cycle, 6 CO2 needs 18 ATP and 12 NADPH for the ultimate production of glucose.
  • Thus 1 CO2 needs 3 ATP and 2 NADPH.
  • Thus option c is correct.
