❇ The poem " PHOTOGRAPH" is written by SHIRLEY TOULSON. In this poem, the poet describes about the loss of her mother and is related to a PHOTOGRAPH Nostalgia of her mother. The poet looks at the photograph of her mother, which was shot when her mother was about 12 years old. Poet's mother went on a sea / beach holiday with her cousins BETTY AND DOLLY, while they were paddling her uncle took a photograph of them. All the three of them stood smiling through their hair when the photograph was taken. All these happened before the poet was born. Years passed since then. Her mother grew up into an adult. They all underwent into changes while the sea stood still. After about 20 or 30 years later the poet's mother would look at the photograph nostalgically and remembers her past. The sea holiday memories were past of the Poet's mother and the laughing of her mother was the past of the a poet. This makes poet sad when she sees the Snapshot of her mother and ponders that the terrible feets washed by the waves are passed away with the passage of time. Poet feels an acute sense of loss. Poet's mother died 12 years ago and now poet has nothing to say about this. The silence in the photograph silences the poet in deprivation of her mother.

Answer:

A Photograph Summary compares the internal state of nature and the momentary state of humans. In the poem, poetess describes a photograph of her mothers’ childhood. In the photograph of time when she went for a sea holiday with her two girl cousins. Also, poetess contrasts between nature, altering at the pace of a snail and the fast-changing human life. Poetess remembers how her mother laughs at the photograph and feel disappointed at the loss of her childhood joys. However, then, the sea holiday was her mother’s past and now her mother’s laugh is the poetess’s past. At different periods of time and with great difficulty, both resolve with their respective losses and the pain that involves in remembering past. Besides, for the poetess, his mother’s death of her mother brings great sadness and a dire sense of loss. Moreover, the painful ‘silence’ of the situation leaves her without words.
