For complete combustion of 1 mole of each propane and butane. we have to find the sum of minimum number of moles of O₂ required.

solution : let's see reaction of propane and oxygen ..

C3H8 + 5O2 => 3CO2 + 4H2O

by reaction, it is clear that one mole of propane burns completely with 5 moles of oxygen.

so, 5 moles of oxygen required for complete combustion of propane.

again see reaction of butane and oxygen..

C4H10 + (13/2)O2 => 4CO2 + 5H2O

13/2 moles of oxygen is required to complete combustion of 1 mole of butane.

Therefore the sum of minimum no of moles of O₂ required, is (5 + 13/2) = 23/2 moles.
