In 2012, Delhi Jal Board chose Veolia to build the city’s first sustainable sewage treatment in the north western part of Delhi, Nilothi, through a design, build and operate contract. The plant of 91 MLD capacity functions with green processes that include the production of biogas and compost. Around 50% of the electricity requirement of the plant is served by the in-house generated bio-gas.
The sludge treatment system of Nilothi removes effluents like nitrogen and phosphorus from the treated wastewater to minimize the impact on the environment before it is discharged into the Yamuna River. Further the compost generated from the sludge composting process can be used as fertilizers and is distributed to the local farmers
