For electrolysis to work, use compound should be a conductor.

  • The electrolysis is a process where chemical reaction takes place when we apply electricity through a chemical compound.
  • Now, the chemical compound should be capable of conduct electricity in order to take part in the chemical reaction.
  • So, the conductive chemical materials are needed in the electrolysis process. (These materials are mostly dissolved or in molten state.)

For Electrolysis to work , Used Compound should be a Conductor

Reason :

1. Electrolysis is the process in which electricity is passed through a chemical compound for decomposition .

2. A compound used in electrolysis should be a good electrolyte means which can conduct the electricity through the movement of ions in their fused or aqueous solution.

3.  For electrolysis to work, the compound must contain ions. Covalent compounds cannot act as electrolytes because they contain neutral atoms.

4. The ions must be free to move, which is possible when an ionic substance is dissolved in water or it is melted.

So a compound should be a strong electrolyte like HCl. H2SO4, NH4Cl etc
