Franz was more tempted to run off instead of going to school because it was a bright and sunny day. Mr. Hamel, Franz's french teacher had told the students that he would be questioning them on participles and Franz didn't know a thing about participles. The Prussian soldiers drilling, the chirping of the birds and the thought of sliding on the Saar were more tempting than to attend his French lesson. He was in a great dread to receive scolding from Mr. Hamel that day.
