For Franz the bright day, the chirping of the birds and the drill performed by the Prussian soldiers. Instead, to attend the class he wanted to spend time outside and enjoy the beauty of the day. He didn't like M. Hamel who always asked him questions whose answer he didn't know. He felt running from the school in place of attending French lessons.
