For greater stability,a nucleus should have greater value of binding energy per nucleon,why?

A nucleus contains positively charged protons confined to every small region .so the repulsive forces are large.In order to bind the nucleons together large amount of binding energy is needed. This is achieved when binding energy per nucleon has a greater value close to 8MeV per nucleon.
