Testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) are required to obtain full reproductive potential. In the testis, somatic Sertoli cells transduce signals from testosterone and FSH into the production of factors that are required by germ cells as they mature into spermatozoa.

Inside the testes, there are some specialised cells called as sertoli cells distibuted in the walls of seminiferous tubules. The immature sperms or the spermatozoa embed their head into the wall os the sertoli cells. Sertoli cells nourish the young sperm cells with nutrients and blood products.

Germinal epithelium: It is the peritoneal membrane which lines the gonads. In males, there occur seminiferous tubules which have different layers of cells. Germinal epithelium occurs in the seminiferous tubules. Germinal epithelium is separated into two compartments by  a tuft of blood vessels. The first layer is called as  basal compartment which contains sertoli cells and diploid germ cell precursors. Second  layer is called as adluminal compartment which contains the products of meiosis.
