At the meeting, they affirmed their support for a “free and open Indo-Pacific” and the centrality of the ASEAN.

Since then, officials have met at least twice a year on the sidelines of multilateral fora. These meetings have not yielded any joint statement, but each side had issued a separate press statement. This time there have been no press releases, except for tweets from the official accounts of the ministers.

• After this meeting, there hadn’t been any discussions or meetings until 2017 during the East Asian summit where officials decided to revive the discussions.  

• At the meeting, the discussion was about supporting free and open Indo-Pacific and other matters affecting ASEAN. Since 2017 revival, the officials have met twice a year alongside other forums.

• According to one of the official’s tweet, the 2019 discussion included maintaining prosperous and open Indo-Pacific.
