For ionic compounds, why is it reasonable to use the term 'formula weight
rather than molecular weight'?

Formula weight is used for NaCl as it is an ionic compund. Sodium chloride do not exist as individual molecules. Therefore, it is appropriate to use the term formula weight for this type of compound. . or example, water,carbon-dioxide etc and the term molecular weight is used for them..
