For many years people used to think that peptic ulcers, which cause acidity
related pain and bleeding in the stomach, were because of lifestyle reasons.
Robin Warren and Barry Marshall – the pathologists found the signs of
inflammation were always present around the bacteria causing peptic ulcers.
They showed that patients could be cured of peptic ulcer only when the bacteria
were killed off from the stomach. This showed that peptic ulcer can be cured by
treating with antibiotics.
