a) If both ‘a’ and ‘b’ are integers then

a <= (a/b) . … 1 The equality will hold only if a=b=1

b <= (b/a) ….. 2

as division of course by definition reduces the value

b) If equality holds in 1 or 2 the equality must hold in the other for the equation a + b = a/b +b/a to hold

a and b => a = 1 and b =1

so a^2+b^2 = 2
