For question numbers 1, 2 and 3, two statements are given- one labeled Assertion (A) and the

other labeled Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions from the codes (a), (b), (c)

and (d) as given below:

a) Both A and R are true, and R is correct explanation of the assertion.

b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

c) A is true, but R is false.

d) A is false, but R is true.

1 ) Assertion: After white washing the walls, a shiny white finish on walls is

obtained after two to three days.

Reason: Calcium Oxide reacts with Carbon dioxide to form Calcium

Hydrogen Carbonate which gives shiny white finish.

2) Assertion: Food chain is responsible for the entry of harmful chemicals in our

bodies.

Reason: The length and complexity of food chains vary greatly.

OR

Assertion: Greater number of individuals are present in lower trophic levels.

Reason: The flow of energy is unidirectional.

3) Assertion: A geneticist crossed a pea plant having violet flowers with a pea

plant with white flowers, he got all violet flowers in first generation.

Reason: White colour gene is not passed on to next generation.

Answer:

1) For the first question, correct answer c) A is true, but R is false.

  • After whitewashing walls, a shiny finish appears on the walls due to calcium carbonate.
  • Whitewash contains calcium hydroxide.
  • This calcium hydroxide reacts with the carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere to form calcium carbonate.
  • The process takes two to three days.

Therefore, the assertion is true, but the reason is false.

2) For the second question, the correct answer is b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

  • Food chains are responsible for the entry of harmful chemicals into our bodies.
  • Because of biomagnification, chemicals that are harmful and are not metabolized by the human body pass into the food chain.
  • This happens irrespective of the length and complexity of the food chains.

Therefore, the assertion, as well as the reason, are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

3) For the third question, the correct answer is b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

  • The number of individuals in the lower trophic levels is greater in number.
  • This is because, in higher trophic levels, the complexity of organisms increases and the number decreases.
  • This maintains the balance in the ecosystem.
  • On the other hand, the flow of energy is always unidirectional in an ecosystem, irrespective of the number of individuals at the trophic levels.

Therefore, the assertion and the reason are both true, but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

4) For the fourth question, the correct answer is c) A is true, but R is false.

  • On crossing a pea plant having white flowers with a pea plant having violet flowers, all violet flowers can be obtained in the first generation.
  • This is because the violet color genes are more dominant than the white color genes and hence appear in the first generation.
  • The white color genes are passed on to the next generation, but being less dominant than the violet color genes, they do not appear in the first generation.
  • White color flowers will show their traits in the second generation.

Therefore, the assertion is true but the reason is false.
