For answering your question comprehensively regarding one need not have to type the required word in the find and replace dialog box, I will consider the following applications and true or false statements with reference to that software:

MS Word (any edition after 2013) : For MS Word, there are two options to choose under the Home tab. One is Find. Other is Find and Replace. Clicking the Find tab will open a slide screen from the left hand-side which will be labelled as "Navigation". You can use this tab to find a word or a group of words without having to specifically use the Find and Replace dialog box. On the other hand, clicking the Replace option under the Home tab will open a dialog box of "Find and Replace". Under this dialog box, there are two sub-tabs termed as "Find", "Replace" and "Go To". By clicking the sub-tab named "Find", you can perform the same action as performed earlier in the navigation pane but now you will have an additional feature to highlight the searched word or group of words throughout the document. Therefore, the answer with respect to MS Word is False as there are multiple options to perform the same task.

For MAC Pages software: In the toolbar option, click "Show Find and Replace". Now on the left of the dialog box, there will be an arrow just besides the settings icon. You can click that arrow and a drop-down list will show options of "Find" and "Find and Replace". You can choose Find if you only wish to search a word or group of words. Therefore, in this case, the answer is True as there are common search dialog boxes for "Find" and "Find and Replace" but either of the option can be chosen from the drop-down list.
