Stomata are the minute pores that are present on the surface of leaves that help in the passage of gaseous exchange and exchange of water vapour during photosynthesis and transpiration.  

Stomata is mainly present on the under surface of the leaves. This is because the stomata is a pore, which if blocked by the dusts and other particles falling on the leaf can hinder the gaseous exchange. Also the direct sunlight falling on the upper surface of the leaves will increase the transpiration rate to a huge extent. Thirdly, most of the plants have thick layer of cuticle on their upper surface of leaf. So the peel should be taken from lower surface of leaves to visualize stomata under a light microscope.
