For the coil in the diagram below, when the switch is pressed
(a) what is the polarity of end A?
(b) which way will the compass point then?

(a) End A matches S-pole i.e South pole.

(b) Compass point tip moves towards right.

Explanation:

After pressing the switch

a) The current flows clockwise at the edge of A, so this end behaves like the South Pole.

b) Another edge of the coil behaves like the North Pole and due to the opposing force (causes a push or pull between the objects) at the North Pole the compass (compass point) distant away from that coil .
