for the following data draw a less than ogive curve and hence find the median

age : 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70
(in years )

number of per. 5 15 20 25 15 11 9

100

n= 100

n/2 = 50

median = 32

Given :

some data

To Find & Draw : median & less than ogive

Solution:

Age No. of Less Cumulative

Persons than Frequency

0-10 5 10 5

10-20 15 20 20

20-30 20 30 40

30-40 25 40 65

40-50 15 50 80

50-60 11 60 91

60-70 9 70 100

Median is given by the x-coordinate of the point corresponding to Cumulative frequency n/2 of the ‘more than’ ogive or ‘less than’ ogive.

• In an ogive given data is plotted on X axis.

• Cumulative frequency is plotted on Y axis.

• So, for less than ogive median value is X coordinate of Cumulative frequency (n/2) which is Y coordinate.

n/2 = 50

So, from graph X coordinate corresponding to y = 50 is 33 (approx)

So , median is 33 (approx)
