When BJTs are employed in real-world circuits, they are usually powered by a single voltage source. This is related to the location of the transistor. For example, a cell phone has only one battery, possibly 3.3V, a car has a 12V battery, an MP3 player has 1.5V, and so on. To "bias" our system, we'd like to employ two different voltage sources a 5V source for the base and a 15V source for the collector. Both a collector and an emitter. However, because we only have one voltage source, say 15V, we can't use only one voltage supply must be used to apply the right voltage to the base and collector.
