For the propagation of mechanical waves, medium should be continuous and elastic, why?

bcz mechanical waves travels in forms of rarefactions and compressions.....so if there is no continuous medium compression or rarefaction could not occur and the waves cannot travel....
the medium should be elastic so that it could again restore it's original shape after each compressions
