The rate of reaction r for the reaction A→B is given by :
r=k[A],
where k is the rate constant and [A] is the concentration of the reactant.(I've assumed the reaction to follow first order kinetics.)
So r is directly proportional to the concentration of the reactant,i.e. rate increases on increasing reactant concentration.
However, the concentration of A is actually in moles/Litre, which is moles per unit volume.
Hence, r is inversely proportional to the volume and the rate decreases on increasing volume of the reaction vessel.
