where u = object distance

v = image distance

i = height of image

o = height of object

As object is kept erect

o > 0

Also it is given that image is erect.Hence

i > 0

As i and o have equal sigh i/o is positive i.e.

i/o > 0

⇒ v/u > 0

Therefore, u and v have the same sign.It means image is formed on the same side of the lens as the object. Since such image are not formed by real intersection of ligh rays but rather by extending back the path of light ray(definition of virtual image) , the image will be virtual image for a real object.
