have had the opportunity of hosting foreigners, not exactly tourists , but business associates on their maiden visit to India. Although my husband had met them abroad officially, he would invite them and their spouses to India to give them a first hand experience of India.

I would be meeting them for the first time but in true Indian style we would invite them for dinner at home and give them a grand tour of our home.( I do not know if foreigners do it but we do it to every single guest of ours when he visits the first time). I cook all the exotic dishes I am capable of keeping in mind the spice tolerance of the guest.

As long as they are in India we put them up in very good hotels so that they feel comfortable and also offer them our home without any hesitation. ( my son's American friend stayed with us for a few days while visiting Chennai).

We do not pack them off with a tourist guide but accompany them throughout their stay planning their lunches and dinners. I also accompany them shopping for some Indian clothes or gift items but I always pay for them. As they are our guests I believe we should take care of every little thing.

Some times we just relax at my home when they are too tired of the heat and dust outside. And when it is time to leave we go to the airport to send them off. And then my role ends.

To treat guests as God is our Dharma. But the satisfaction you get when you do or give something is far more fulfilling than just being nice for the sake of formality.
